Top 5 Vape Mods
Original Vape Mods
The term mod originates from the fact that the first generation of powerful, refillable vaping devices were derived from modified flashlights, using the same 18650 batteries and metallic tube as that old camping stand-by. These were called mechanical or mech mods. They required a solid understanding of electricity and constant vigilance. Containing no circuitry, they were just a battery and heating element. Outside of hobbyists, they have fallen by the wayside as affordable vape mods capable of producing 200 or more watts are now widely available.
The necessity for 300-watt devices is not so great as it was a decade ago. Mech mods often used wound wire coils. Today, improved mesh coil designs made from safe and high-tech materials can generate ludicrous amounts of vapor and flavor at 100 watts or less. Even the most vigorous cloud chasers generally operate below 120 watts.
Vaping has come a long way in the last decade and there is no reason for an adult cloud chaser not to be using a modern vape mod complete with a suite of safety features. It should be noted in passing that the first generation of Tesla was powered by some 7,100 18650 batteries and their more modern offerings use improved versions of the same battery technology. Vape mods are in good company when it comes to improvising a technology from a time-tested battery design like the 18650 and its linear descendants the 20700 and 21700.
What is a Vape Mod?
With improvements in vaping technology, the definition of what makes a vape mod has grown increasingly blurry. There are now vape pods, a category that once consisted exclusively of low-wattage salt nic vape pens, with considerable power. There are even vape pods that have swappable 18650 batteries.
On the flipside of the coin, at one time vape mods almost exclusively used swappable 18650 batteries. There are now plenty of amazing mods with integrated lithium-ion batteries.
What separates a vape mod from a vape pod is that a vape mod has 510 threading and is designed to use a 510 threaded vape tank. A 510 threaded tank, no matter the manufacturer, will be compatible with most vape mods. There are some differences in tank sizes and wattage requirements. A 26mm vape tank will overhang the side of a small 22mm vape mod like the Vaporesso Gen Nano.
In the past, vape pods were viewed as being salt nic devices specialized for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping. Mods were cloud machines optimized for direct-to-lung (DTL) vaping and guzzling max-VG juices. But with these lines are being increasingly blurred, as vape pods increase in size and power.
Unlike with vape pods, you do not need to buy a proprietary and compatible refillable pod from the manufacturer to attach to your vape mod. In practice, 510 compatible threading means you can affix just about any 510 tank to your old, five-year-old Smok Alien vape mod.
Just about any sub-ohm tank will use clear Pyrex, wide gauge drip-tip and swappable coils. Any number of companies make tanks that fit on almost any vape mod. On the other hand, if you use a Smok Nord vape pod, you are stuck using Smok manufactured Nord pods.
The vape tanks used on vape mods are almost always sub-ohm. They may have higher resistance coil options, but vape tanks focus on sub-ohm coil designs that specialize in vapor production.
There are several styles of vape mods. The most common form is the box mod. It is a rectangular vaping device with a pair of 18650 batteries, a screen with menu navigation, and adjustable wattage. They are the cutting-edge of vaping technology. Tube mods were once popular but have been largely squeezed out by flexible vape pod kits.
Buying a Vape Mod
Some mods are sold as just the device, but most are sold as complete vape mod kits. This means a compatible vape tank, often designed specifically for the mod, and replacement coils come with. They are usually great price performers, as both mod and tank are cheaper when bought together.
When buying a vape mod kit, you will want to check to see if the mod you are purchasing has an integrated battery unless you already have compatible 18650 batteries on hand.
Generalities and concepts only help so much when defining a vape mod. Each vaper has unique preferences, and the many excellent mod designs on the market demonstrate there is no single right answer. Let’s look at the state of the art in vaping and the top 5 vape mods. Their characteristics will illustrate the capabilities and strengths of the mighty vape mod.
